Oh, for a Faith That Will Not Shrink
By William H. Bathurst
Oh, for a faith that will not shrink,
though pressed by every foe,
that will not tremble on the brink
of any earthly woe!
That will not murmur nor complain
beneath the chastening rod,
but, in the hour of grief or pain,
will lean upon its God.
A faith that shines more bright and clear
when tempests rage without;
that when in danger knows no fear,
in darkness feels no doubt.
A faith that keeps the narrow way
till life's last hour is fled,
and with a pure and heavenly ray
lights up a dying bed.
Lord, give me such a faith as this,
and then, whatever may come,
I'll taste, even here, the hallowed bliss
of an eternal home.
The hymn above speaks to a very real and human need. Every day we experience things that examine our faith. Whether you are solid in your faith or if you are uncertain in trials and tribulations, the need for God's security is real in every hour. Often the world around us gives us doubt or anxiety about the stability of our lives, futures, or dreams. In these moments, I believe that this hymn is a good model of what to ask from the Lord.
Pray for the faith that is described in this hymn. A faith that will not shrink is insurance for any situation. A faith that keeps from complaints because of the assurance that God is bigger than anything we may encounter. A faith that serves as a shelter from the storms of life and works as comfort in our hour of need. A faith that is such a blessing to have that it motivates us to be better people and live better lives. And lastly, a faith that gives us peace beyond anything we can imagine or understand. As you go out this week, think of such things and ask for such a faith as this. May God bless you with exactly what you need for what lies ahead!
