Hard Luck by Edgar Guest

Hard Luck

by Edgar Guest

Ain’t no use as I can see

In sittin’ underneath a tree

And growlin’ that your luck is bad,

And that your life is extry sad;

Your life ain’t sadder than your neighbor’s

Nor any harder are your labors;

It rains on him the same as you,

And he has work he hates to do;

And he gits tired and he gits cross,

And he has trouble with the boss;

You take his whole life, through and through,

Why, he’s no better off than you.

If whinin’ brushed the clouds away

I wouldn’t have a word to say;

If it made good friends out of foes

I’d whine a bit, too, I suppose;

But when I look around and see

A lot of men resemblin’ me,

And see them sad, and see them gay

With work to do most every day,

Some full of fun, some bent with care,

Some havin’ troubles hard to bear,

I reckon, as I count my woes,

They’re ’bout what everybody knows.

The day I find a man who’ll say

He’s never known a rainy day,

Who’ll raise his right hand up and swear

In forty years he’s had no care,

Has never had a single blow,

And never known one touch of woe,

Has never seen a loved one die,

Has never wept or heaved a sigh,

Has never had a plan go wrong,

But allas laughed his way along;

Then I’ll sit down and start to whine

That all the hard luck here is mine.

The lighthearted poem above points out an interesting life truth. Everyone experiences trials in life. However, living with a positive attitude is perhaps one of the hardest things to do in this world. Complaints and annoyances seem to be plentiful when our attitude runs unchecked. When negative complaints begin to creep into your day consider, you're not alone when dealing with life problems. The pains of life affect all people equally. As you go out this week, search for the blessings between the stress. The cares of this world are going to continue; however, our attitude can improve. Keep your mind on things above and seek the best in the mess.
